Coming Soon: Walking Wednesdays

This year, Veazie Community School is excited to introduce a new initiative called Walking Wednesdays! On select Wednesdays in the fall and spring, we’re encouraging students to walk, ride their bikes, or use another healthy form of exercise to get to school. Buses will still be running, but on September 25, October 2, and October 9, volunteers and members of the Veazie Police Department will be stationed throughout the community to assist children with getting to and from school safely. More details will be shared as the dates approach!

The Book Barn Comes To VCS

The Book Barn, sponsored by Maine Agriculture in the Classroom, has found a new home at VCS...at least for a while. In addition to the great offerings we already have in the VCS library, students now have access to a collection of books in with topics ranging from dirt, worms, gardens, apples, bees, tractors, butterflies and more. The collection has wonderful offerings for our youngest and oldest readers! VCS will host the barn until around Thanksgiving and then we’ll pass it along to another school.

Thank you Ms. Holmes and Mrs. Richard for helping make this possible!

NextGen 529 Accounts

NextGen

Parents,

It's never too early to start thinking about your child's educational future. NextGen 529 is Maine's education savings plan that many Maine families use to invest for higher education. Beyond the tax advantages, there are matching grants for Maine residents which can be worth as much as $300 per child, per year.

For more information, go to NextGenforME.com. And thank you to the Alfond Foundation helping Maine children have easier access to higher education.

The Anxious Generation- Books Available

This fall, the VCS professional community is participating in a collective book read. All staff members and school committee members have begun reading The Anxious Generation, a best-selling book that analyzes "The harmful effects of growing up online." While screens have become a normalized part of children's development today, social psychologist John Haidt argues the negative impacts might outweigh the benefits.

At VCS, we are having professional conversations at all levels to determine the appropriate amount of use technology has in-school, but we also want parents to be included in these conversations as screen time is often greater at home.

Using grant funds, we purchased a copy of The Anxious Generation for all staff members and school committee members to own. But we do have seven extra copies that parents are welcome to for free. It will be based on a one per family basis and first-come, first-serve basis. Please message Mr. Tweedie at ttweedie@veaziecs.org to reserve your free copy while they last.

In addition to this book study, in late October, all VCS community members are invited to attend a virtual meeting featuring Brooke Shannon, founder of the Wait Until Eighth movement. Her message focuses on the benefits of waiting until high school to provide children will smart phones. More information about this opportunity will be shared as the date approaches.

Substitutes Needed!!

Are you looking for a rewarding job with flexible scheduling? Veazie Community School is in need of substitute teachers for the 2024-25 school year. The rate of pay is $115 per day and we can help walk you through the application process.

The first step is to complete the application using the following link: Sub Application

You will need to complete a CHRC and we can help walk you through that process. Feel free to call superintendent/principal Tim Tweedie or H.R. director Lisa Swift for more information (207-947-6573).

Flex Friday Ideas:

Do you or someone you know have a special skill or hobby you'd be willing to share with students? At VCS, we are always looking for new ideas for our monthly Flex Fridays. The 90 minute sessions are designed to provide opportunities for students to learn about topics they might not otherwise have the opportunity to. Examples of possible Flex lessons we would like to offer: tying flies, playing the guitar, knitting/crocheting, baking, or other topics you feel would be of value.

Please reach out to Mr. Tweedie or Ms. Lindsey in the office to express your willingness to help students learn a new skill. Our first Flex Friday of the year is on September 27th from 12:45-2:15 PM. Our next one will be Friday, October 25th from 8:15-9:45 AM. We're always open to new ideas, so thank you in advance for any that you care to offer.
